Quotes for July 4

You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4, not with a parade of guns, tanks, and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy, and the flies die from happiness. You may think you have overeaten, but it is patriotism.
-- Erma Bombeck

October. This is one of the peculiarly dangerous months to speculate in stocks in. The others are July, January, September, April, November, May, March, June, December, August, and February.
-- Mark Twain

Better to starve free than be a fat slave.
-- Aesop

I have always been among those who believed that the greatest freedom of speech was the greatest safety, because if a man is a fool, the best thing to do is to encourage him to advertise the fact by speaking.
-- Woodrow T. Wilson

Liberty means responsibility. That is why most men dread it.
-- George Bernard Shaw

Patriotism is the last refuge of scoundrels.
-- Mark Twain

Republicans believe every day is the Fourth of July, but the democrats believe every day is April 15.
-- Ronald Reagan

July 4. Statistics show that we lose more fools on this day than in all the other days of the year put together. This proves, by the number left in stock, that one fourth of July per year is now inadequate, the country has grown so.
-- Mark Twain

If there must be trouble let it be in my day, that my child may have peace.
-- Thomas Paine (1737-1809)

Liberty lies in the hearts of men and women; when it dies there, no constitution, no law, no court can save it.
-- Judge Learned Hand

A Home Water Filter - Is it necessary to filter our drinking

by Andie Klein

Do we really need a home water filter? Can't we just assume the water that flows from our kitchen and bathroom tap is sufficiently treated for contaminants by our municipal water facility? In order to answer these questions, we need to obtain a little more background information.

Next to air, water is the most important element for our survival.
Water is an integral part of our life and we use it for many house hold tasks through out the day, such as: drinking and brushing our teeth, steaming fish and vegetables, washing salad greens, face and hand washing, showering and bathing, feeding the pets and watering our plants.

Most of us take it for granted that our tap water is safe to drink and use for common house hold tasks. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), however, estimates that 45,000,000 people drink tap water that is polluted with chemicals, lead, germs, parasites and other impurities.

A large majority of the major U.S. cities still employ the same basic water treatment technologies that have been used since before World War I. In cities such as Atlanta, Boston and Washington, D.C. consumers are relying on pipes that are, on average, over a century old. Many people don't realize that our municipal water treatment plants are not designed to remove synthetic chemicals and as a result we find traces of health threatening contaminants in most of our public water supplies.

Situations arise when our tap water is polluted with more than the usual amount of contaminants. Municipal treatment plants have breakdowns that take time to repair. Lead leaches into our drinking water from old pipes and private wells. Smaller water-supply sources can become contaminated from agricultural and other environmental pollutants.

It is difficult to be sure of the exact amount of toxins in our water supply. The EPA has estimated that, in our modern society, we use in excess of 75,000 toxic chemicals and more than 1000 new chemicals are developed each year. The Ralph Nader Research Group after reviewing thousands of pages of EPA documents acquired through the Freedom of Information Act concluded that to date more than 2100 toxic chemicals have already been detected in U.S. water supplies.

Our planet earth reuses the same water over and over again, which means there is no "new water". Every single chemical used in our society, eventually winds up in our water supplies. As the use of synthetic organic chemicals increases, so does the toxicity of our water. The earth's natural filtration process is not effective at removing these toxic synthetic organic chemicals.

The human body is made up of over 70% water. The proper function of each organ system, as well as every healing process that happens inside our body, takes place with water. Optimal functioning is only possible when water, our body's transport medium is clean. Wastes form during the body's metabolism and if these wastes are allowed to accumulate through insufficient water intake, fatigue and even illness results.

If we drink water that contains chlorine or other organic and inorganic chemicals, we force our liver and kidneys to act as a filter for these contaminants. The liver purifies and detoxifies the blood of waste products and toxins. In addition to regulating the body's water balance and maintaining optimal pH,the kidney also removes metabolic waste products from the bloodstream.

By providing the liver and kidneys with water, a universalsolvent and transport medium, they are assisted in their role asa natural body filter. Bombarding these organs with water thatcontains traces of additional toxins only hinders the bodydetoxification process and delays waste removal.

Water may not cure every ailment, but it is a primary ingredient that allows our body to dilute and eliminate toxins that haveaccumulated over time.

What Can We Do To Provide Healthy Water For Our Family?
The simplest, most effective and also the most economical way totreat municipal tap water is a home water filter. Multi-mediawater filters that combine activated carbon with iron exchangemedia such as KDF are an excellent choice.

Carbon and KDF work together to remove or reduce traces of contaminants such as chlorine, lead, Cryptosporidium and Giardia cysts, synthetic chemicals, volatile organic compounds (VOCs),MTBE, pesticides (lindane, atrazine), chemicals linked to cancer (benzene, TTHMs, toxaphene) and hundreds of other chemical contaminants that may be present causing bad taste and odors in your drinking water.

The result is healthy, great-tasting water that still contains natural trace minerals that are beneficial to optimal well being and health.

London Builders - Remodeling Your Bathroom

We head for the bathroom as soon as we get up, and sometimes our mood depends on the exterior and comfort of this room. One wants to make the visit to the bathroom the first pleasant moment of the starting morning. This article tells about methods of beautification of the non-residential premise that rouses a number of censures because of inconvenience of planning and minimum space. Our dear readers must have already guessed that in this article we will talk about bathrooms.

So, you have decided to change the appearance of your water closet. The first and the most important thing for you to know is that you can't do without planning decisions. Simple relocation of sanitaryware equipment will not increase the amount of so needed space. Let us consider several variants of design of bathrooms for premises with small area. We offer for your consideration variants that use the system of installation. The essence of this system lies in moving the waste tank, pipes and fixture of the lavatory pan into the wall with the help of the special fixation system. As a result, there appears additional free space. You will easily be able to get to the farthest corner of the bathroom and keep the floor clean. Moreover, this technology enables to keep peace and quiet in your bathroom and neighbouring premises. Additional surfaces revealed by installation will be not only practical in terms of hygiene, but will also make your bathroom more modern and beautiful. Usage of non-standard elements and complication of form of the premise will also help to use the area rationally. For example, the sink, shower cabin or washing machine can be concealed in the niche of the wall. Very interesting is the variant, when the bath is located in the corner, diagonally, which vacates the space along walls and also makes the premise look elegant.

A podium is of great importance for appearance and comfort of the bathroom. Stage hoisting is intended for making the way in and out of bath easier. Depending on the style of the design, footsteps can have various shapes, whether a classical flight of stairs or a pleasant flexible line. However during the choice of any variant it is necessary to take into account that facing tile for footsteps is to have nonslippery properties. If we make use of these small tricks, we will get so needed additional space where we can locate a bidet and laundry area, for example. However, be reasonable about additional functions for your bathroom and not showing excessive zeal, remember about free space, required for moving about. Some standard flats have such tiny bathrooms that no alterations and relocations, without radical changes, will add the needed space.

In more commodious bathrooms, the design fantasy can create such pirouettes that you can hardly imagine. We will illustrate our statement with an example of a fascinating and non-standard planning. Construction of the free-standing wall can not only add originality and style to your bathroom, but can also block the view of the toilet. As a result, there appears additional surface, which you can rationally use. In this case it was suggested to mount the wash-bowl with sufficiently large mirror on it. From the opposite side of the free-standing partition you can make open shelves for storing bathing accessories and various domestic trifles.

By the way, zoning of little water closets is best done by functional elements instead of bulky partitions "eating away" the area. Decor of the bathroom in the "empire" style is another illustration of our statement. Columns, supporting a cap, walls, finished by the Venetian plaster, original lights, mosaic panel over the bathroom, ceiling from built-in glass with double highlighting give the premise the look of a unique architectural masterpiece. Let us underline that finishing of walls can be absolutely different in any variant of planning, starting from paving of one-colour tile over all perimeter and ending by an art panel or by the combined variant: tile + paint. It is better to choose water heat-insulated floor as the floor coverage for the bathroom. The floor ceramic tile that variety can satisfy any taste also did not lose its actuality. It is better to cover the overhead surface by stretched ceilings (refer to the previous article) or ceiling panels, these constructions are durable, aesthetically beautiful and quickly mounted. And spot lights, which fill the space with pleasant light, give an ideal fit for them. Certainly, the above-mentioned design decisions are only a few examples of bathroom planning. Surely, the designers of leading repair and construction companies during the development of interior will take into account SPECIFICALLY YOUR tastes and wishes. And after stepping on the threshold of your new bathroom, you will switch into a wonderful mood and will exclaim in rapture: "Long live the scented soap and the fluffy towel!"

Flag Day – June 14

Flag Day, is a day for all Americans to celebrate and show respect for our flag, its designers and makers. Our flag is representative of our independence and our unity as a nation.....one nation, under God, indivisible. Our flag has a proud and glorious history. It was at the lead of every battle fought by Americans. Many people have died protecting it. It even stands proudly on the surface of the moon.

Properly Display Our Flag

There is a right way and a wrong way to display the flag. The American flag should be held in the highest of regards. It represents our nation and the many people who gave their lives for our country and our flag. Here are the basics on displaying the American flag:

  • The flag is normally flown from sunrise to sunset.

  • In the morning, raise the flag briskly. At sunset, lower it slowly. Always, raise and lower it ceremoniously.

  • The flag should not be flown at night without a light on it.

  • The flag should not be flown in the rain or inclement weather.

  • After a tragedy or death, the flag is flown at half staff for 30 days. It's called "half staff" on land ,and "half mast" on a ship.

  • When flown vertically on a pole, the stars and blue field, or "union", is at the top and at the end of the pole (away from your house).

  • The American flag is always flown at the top of the pole. Your state flag and other flags fly below it.

  • The union is always on top. When displayed in print, the stars and blue field are always on the left.

  • Never let your flag touch the ground, never...period.

  • Fold your flag when storing. Don't just stuff it in a drawer or box.

Home Improvement Mistakes to Avoid

By Jennifer Jordan

Home improvement can be a bit of a pain, a pain in the neck and a pain in the checkbook. It typically involves long hours, patience, and a good amount of money. If this wasn't enough, home improving your house is also often wrought with mistakes, mistakes that can cause longer hours, more patience, and even more money. For this reason, it's important to avoid as many mistakes as you can, and improve your chances at a pleasurable home improvement experience.

Don't Buy Cheap Materials: Inexpensive materials may seem like a great idea – why buy lumber for a hundred dollars when you can get it for fifty dollars – but home improvement is one area where the mantra "you get what you pay for" holds very true. It's easy for others – neighbors, friends, and potential home buyers – to notice when someone has tried to beat the system by applying only one layer of paint, placing new linoleum over existing tile, or using duct tape instead of a decent adhesive. Instead of buying cheap materials, splurge on expensive ones: there is no point in engaging in home improvement if it's not actually going to improve your home.

Don't Forget to Make a Plan: You might have the urge to dive right in, thinking that home improvement is just a long name for home improv. But, engaging in any form of home improvement without a plan is like going on road trip without directions. Avoid frustration and potential mistakes by preparing a written plan ahead of time. Make sure your plan reflects that certain things will take longer than you think, certain things must be done in order – such as sanding a deck before you can seal it – and that certain things must be given adequate time to set and dry. It's also a good idea to include some flexibility in your plan: remember that in home improvement some things can suddenly come up, such as the floor.

Don't Interview Just one Contractor: Contractors are like mechanics: some are honest and some are greasy. For these reasons, it's important that you audition several contractors for the job at hand. Make sure the contractor you hire has a good reputation, a license and proof of insurance – don't be afraid to ask for actual documentation. And, if you are having a hard time finding a contractor you trust – if every one you've interviewed reminds you of a politician – ask for a referral from people you know. Your friends, your family, or the butcher at your local market may all know of a great contractor. Take your time in hiring help: it's better to be safe than scammed.

Don't Do Things Yourself that You Can't Do Yourself: Home improvement, for some people, is a time when pride comes out: it gives self-proclaimed handyman a chance to prove their handiness. For this reason, people often tackle jobs for which they aren't really qualified. If you know nothing about installing a sink, don't install one yourself: hire a plumber. If you know nothing about pre-wiring a ceiling fan, consult an electrician. If your legs shake each time you climb a ladder, have someone else fix the roof. Don't put yourself or the quality of your home improvement at risk by being too prideful to ask for help: hire a contractor, then just tell everyone that you did it yourself.

Home improvement can surely test your patience. Everything seems a little more expensive, turns out to be a little harder to do, and takes a little longer to fix than you thought. But, in the end, you might just find that it was well worth it: your home improvement may just lead to much more home enjoyment.

Bathroom Renovation Ideas - Choosing The Right Bathroom Sink

Most people have more than enough bathroom renovation ideas in mind when they start a redesign project. However, all too often they jump into the project without any clear idea what the end result and design should be.

The result is they end up with appliances that really don't fit with their new renovation project. For instance, they might start changing cabinets or cupboards without knowing the end result they want. Here are some tips to help you chose the bathroom design you want and pick your appliances accordingly.

Believe it or not, one of the most crucial elements to whether or not your bathroom renovating ideas work out is your sink selection. Many people overlook this seemingly minor yet very important component to your overall bathroom design.

First of all, decide what type of sink you want to have. Would you like to have a traditional sink or a more decorative one? Do you want a stand alone one, an under the counter sink, or one that's mounted on the wall? This choice is very important in determining which sink is right for you.

Of course, your bathroom design will play a big factor in this decision. For instance, you can't have a wall mounted sink if your wall isn't strong enough to support it. You could do some extra remodeling to enable your wall to handle it, but often times that just adds a needless expense to an already admittedly expensive project.

Before you go shopping, measure the space you have available for the sink so that you can choose accordingly. Believe it or not, one of the biggest mistakes people make during a bathroom renovation project is attempting to buy a larger appliance than their bathroom can handle.

After the fact, they find out that they don't have the room necessary to support such a sink. While this certainly isn't a devastating mistake, and you can get your money back, it wastes a lot of needless time and energy that could have easily been avoided with some simple planning.

When shopping for your sink, try doing it online. Often times, you can uncover much better deals on the internet than you'd ever find offline, because of the wide selection available.

A good suggestion when shopping: bring a picture of your desired bathroom design with you. This way, you can easily at a glance determine whether your potential sink will fit with this design before you purchase it. Often times, people purchase a sink because they love the way it looks at the store. However, once they install it in their bathroom, they realize that it doesn't match the rest of the room.

One final note: don't fall in love with the first sink you find. Often times you can find much better deals by simply being patient and shopping around.

As you can see, redesigning your bathroom can be very easy when you have a plan and stick to it. Follow these simple yet very effective bathroom renovation ideas for your next project, and you will attain the bathroom of your dreams much more quickly and affordably than you ever imagined possible.

To learn about renovation financing and other great redesign tips, try checking out http://www.interior-design-success.com. This is a popular interior design site that provides tips on using a home improvements catalogue as well as other great interior design tips.

Her Fix-it Guide to Toilet Repair

Imagine your home without toilets. Yes, the thought itself is enough to make you cringe. The toilet is often the most used, or should we say the most 'misused' fixture in the home. The importance of the toilet can only be felt at the exact point in time when something goes wrong with it. Toilets generally are a fairly easy DIY project that can be successfully completed by anyone. With just a bit of work and the tips you will find in this article, you should be able to quickly fix your toilet.

The first step in fixing a toilet is to determine the problem with the toilet. Your toilet could either be a slow moving toilet, or it could be clogged, or it could even be a running toilet. A slow moving toilet implies that you have to flush the toilet quite a number of times and the water drains away quite slowly. Slow moving toilets are often the result of clogged sewage drain pipes, and are at risk of suddenly clogging completely and overflowing. No one likes to clean up the mess an overflowing toilet creates. A running toilet is one where once you flush it, the water does not want to stop flowing into the toilet bowl. A running toilet can use up a large amount of water over a fairly short period, so it is important to get it fixed as soon as possible.

Make no difference which problem you have, you can fix it yourself. If you happen to have a clogged or slow moving toilet, then the first thing you should do is turn off water supply to the toilet. You can do this can be by turning the knob on the shut off valve to the right until the water supply stops. The valve is normally placed a few inches above the floor on the left when facing the toilet.

Now determine which the problem you have. To do this, pour a bucket of water quickly into the bowl. If it flushes slowly, the toilet has developed a clog. Clear the clog affecting your toilet by first using a plunger. If this removes the clog, then you can turn the water back on to the toilet, if it does not clear the clog, then you should try using a plumber's snake. This tool will allow you to clear most any clog.

Once you have the clog taken care of, then you should clear the mineral deposits that tend to develop in the small holes under the rim of the toilet. This will help your toilet flush much more effectively. These holes can be cleared with a stiff bristled brush, or you can use the bent end of a coat hanger to poke the holes clear. You might also want to make use of a small mirror to see the holes that are being cleared.

If your toilet is letting water into the bowl at all times, then you have a running toilet. First off, remove the toilet tank lid and sit aside out of your way. Some people like to place it in the bathtub. Next check the ball cock, which is the valve that the float is attached to. If water is coming out of the valve, you may need to replace it.

If that doesn't seem to be the problem, then press down on the flap at the bottom of the toilet tank to see if the water stops running into the bowl. Over time, these flaps tend to warp out of shape and cause the tank to leak into the bowl. If this solves the problem, then replace the tank flap.

Whichever needs replacing, be certain to shut off the water supply to the toilet before you begin your repair.

The Bathtub Boom

By Javernick, Ellen

Can you imagine your doctor warning anyone that taking a bath could be unhealthy? In the early 1800s, many doctors thought that bathtubs were carriers of germs, so they advised against their use. The doctors' advice could not have been based on personal experience, because few of them owned tubs. The White House did not even have a bathtub until 1851, when Millard Fillmore was president.

In the nineteenth century, only one home out of six had a bathroom, so children could not just jump into a tub or shower as they do today. A boy or girl got to take only one bath a week. On Saturday nights they all lined up for their turns to wash in a wooden tub in the kitchen. Mothers had to boil the water on the stove and carry it over to fill the tub. No wonder they did hot beg their children to bathe every day!

When the first bathtubs were intoduced, even their namufacturers weren't sure that the new fad would last. They adverstised their products as water troughs and devices for scalding hogs that "when funished with legs could be used as bathing tubs."

The bathtub boom began in America shortly after World War I. By then most middle-class families had indoor plumbing. At first most tubs were made of wood, but as the popularity of the product increased, so did the creativity of tub manufacturers. Before porcelain tubs there were rubber ones resembling the plastic swimming pools kids use today. And despite the bruises metal tubs gave bathers, these devices were popular for a while. Manufacturers even produced portable canvas tubs so that travelers could carry them. These looked like hammocks when stretched between two chairs.

It was a status symbol to have a bathtub, and no one considered it improper to invite guests in to see the bathroom. Tubs with brass fixtures and claw feet were the ultimate in luxury.

In the past few years, bathtubs have again become causes for bragging. Large, elegant tubs, whirlpool baths and hot tubs have become increasingly popular, and owners often invite guests to see them. They tell their friends how soothing baths in these tubs can be.

Doctors no longer warn that bathtubs breed germs. Instead they tell their patients about the benefits of frequent bathing. They even prescribe baths to relieve muscle aches and arthritis pain, as well as to reduce stress. Maybe one of the best reasons doctors encourage frequent trips to the tub is that bathed patients smell better!

Ayurvedic Aromatherapy

India Herbs

Aromatherapy, the therapeutic use of essential oils, is one of the most popular techniques of natural medicine practiced today. It is widely available, pleasant, and easy to use. Everything in your kitchen and bathroom has an aroma that affects you in many ways. The smell of cinnamon can make your mouth water or bring back the memory of grandma's apple pie. Lavender bath salts calm your nervous system as you soak in the tub. Aromas are added to candles, soaps, lotions and massage oils, so oftentimes you are practicing aromatherapy even when you don't realize it.

AN ANCIENT TRADITION
The first form of aromatherapy utilized different kinds of burning Woods, and the use of smoke in the form of incense has survived in almost all cultures.

The Egyptians used aromatics 5,000 years ago for medicinal and cosmetic purposes. The Greeks used olive oil to absorb the odor from flower petals and herbs. Arab physicians perfected the method of distilling essential oils and brought them to Europe. By the 16th century, the women of the household made all kinds of remedies for home use. The new sciences of chemistry and pharmacology, however, reduced these practices to superstition, thus discouraging the use of aromatherapy until the beginning of the 20th century, when a succession of French chemists started to research the healing properties of essential oils. The first and foremost among them, Rene Maurice Gattefosse, turned his attention to the use of oils in dermatology after he discovered how lavender oil healed his burned hand. He coined the word "aromatherapy" in 1928 and published a book by the same title in 1937.
In the eastern cultures of India and China, however, the tradition remained unbroken. Vaidyas, ayurvedic physicians, treated Indian royalty with dried and fresh herbs, floral waters and aromatherapy oil massage.

Essential oils are the highly concentrated essences of aromatic plants. They can be derived from all parts of the plant: flowers (rose), woods (sandalwood), barks (cinnamon), leaves (basil), roots and fruits (orange). The methods of oil extraction are time-consuming and expensive, and require a high degree of expertise.

Some essential oils are especially costly due to the labor intensive process and the quantity of the plant required to produce the oil. For example, approximately 2,000 kilograms of rose petals would produce 1 kg of essential oil, and 4 million jasmine flowers produce a kilogram of jasmine oil. But they are also highly effective — only a few drops are required to achieve the desired effect.

Ayurveda considers the use of aroma as an important tool for prevention and healing. Practitioners use it for protecting the vital force, prana, regulating digestion and metabolism, agni, and increasing resistance to disease, ojas. Traditional ayurvedic practices include fumigation by burning neem leaves, use of holy basil or rose petals in water while bathing, and burning incense sticks during meditation.
Essential oils can be used alone or in combination. Maharishi Ayurveda mixes aromas into synergistic blends to increase their potency and to balance the effect of individual oils.

THERAPEUTIC USES
Smelling: The most important pathway for aromas is through the sense of smell. When we smell essential oils, the vapor stimulates our olfactory nerve. This is the only nerve in the body that directly contacts the environment and goes all the way to the brain. All of our other senses involve several nerves and synaptic junctions before the impulses reach the brain. The olfactory nerve stimulates the limbic system, which is connected to the areas of the brain that process emotions, desires, appetites and memories, as well as the endocrine glands which regulate hormone levels in the body. For this reason, aromas have a subtle but very powerful influence on our mind and body. They can be very effective in the treatment of stress. Scents of vanilla, orange blossom, rose, chamomile and lavender have a noticeable calming effect. Lavender, sandalwood and nutmeg oils also help reduce the ill-effects of stress. Patchouli oil helps reduce anxiety, lifts the mood and increases bliss. Maharishi Ayurveda offers a great variety of therapeutic aroma blends from Calming to Refreshing, from Cooling to Stimulating. They contain pure essential oils, undiluted with a carrier oil. Put them in a room or car diffuser, wear them in an aroma locket, or light one of our aroma candles to relax, uplift your mood or improve your sleep.

Massage: Aromatherapy massage is another widely used ayurvedic technique. When you receive, or give yourself a massage, you not only inhale the essential oils but your skin absorbs them as well.

They penetrate the tissues and find their way into the bloodstream where they are transported to the organs and systems of the body. Essential oils have different rates of absorption so it is best not to shower directly following a massage to ensure maximum effectiveness. Maharishi Ayurveda incorporates aromatherapy into its massage oils. To balance your dosha or to adjust to the seasons try the Relaxing, Cool Sensation or Invigoration aroma massage oils. The M•SPA Youthful Skin Massage Oil is also rich in aromas and balances all the three doshas.

Bath: Aromatic baths are also popular forms of aromatherapy. The large surface of the warm water in the tub instantly vaporizes the essential oils, sending their particles to your brain. Soaking alone relaxes your muscles and your whole physiology, so you enhance the effect of the aromas. Try a few drops of Muscle Rest Aroma oil if you are sore from working out. The Maharishi Ayurveda therapeutic bath salts combine aromas with natural salts, which are also known to relax muscles. Add bath salts right before you enter the tub to enjoy the full potency of their essential oils. They come in seven different combinations such as Relaxing, Rejuvenating and Energizing.

Skin and Hair Care: Most personal care items are scented with aromas, often with synthetic ones. Maharishi Ayurveda uses only pure essential oils in soaps, shampoos, creams and lotions. The smell of roses, jasmine or neem in soaps can enliven your shower. The Rose and Lavender Waters help tone your skin and uplift your spirit. The aromas in the M•SPA Youthful Skin Cream and the Youthful Skin Advanced Lipid Support relax your entire physiology when you put them on. They also get absorbed in your bloodstream through your skin. For this reason, whatever product you use, make sure it contains only natural essential oils and ingredients. Artificial aromas and perfumes will not provide the same benefits and can cause skin irritation or allergies.

Aromatherapy has so many applications that even if you have a busy schedule you can still enjoy its benefits, by lighting an aroma candle as you cook or bathe, or use a car diffuser while you commute to work. Essential oils take up little room, go a long way, yet their effect is very powerful.

Metal Coated Sinks

The different types of metal coated sinks

Of all the materials that is widely used in making kitchen and bathroom sinks, metal is considered to be the most durable one. There are different types of metal and metal coated sinks available in the market these days that are made from stainless steel, cast iron, copper, brass or a combination of these metals.

The most popular and the least expensive among the metal coated kitchen sinks is the stainless steel kitchen and bathroom sinks. As the stainless steel does not have a ceramic or an enamel coating, they are highly durable and will not get easily damaged due to the regular use. The lower the gauge, the heavier and more durable is the steel. The chrome coating applies to its surface will provide the required strength to the sink and will prevent it from cracking, chipping and nicking. The nickel coating applied on the sink surface will increase the quality and life of the sink and will prevent it from rusting, staining or fading. The lower priced models of the stainless steel sinks come without undercoating and are not highly polished and hence tend to be noisy and dent easily. The more expensive models are heavily undercoated to absorb the sounds and noises and to retain heat.

The enamel coated cast iron sinks are the most durable material that is used to make sinks. It is usually the most expensive among the various types of metal coated sinks. The cast iron sinks are also very heavy. The cast iron sink is produced by pouring the liquid or melted iron into a mold and the melted iron takes the shape of the mold it is poured into. The thickness of the cast iron sink along with its heaviness explains why its surface is resistant to acids and also provides extra protection from getting chipped, scratched and dented. The cast iron kitchen sinks with extra thick enamel coating on its surface provides extraordinary beauty to itself and to the surroundings where it is placed. Generally, the cast iron sinks are fire polished to obtain various colors and shining gloss.

To add contemporary and antique look into any bathroom or kitchen, one has to go for the traditional copper sinks. Depending on the type of sink that will suit the décor of the home, one can choose from copper sinks available in the markets in Weathered copper, Dark bronze, Satin nickel and Polished nickel finishes. The hammered copper sinks which are hand hammered to bring out the natural look of copper is the perfect compliment for individual kitchen or bathroom sinks. The copper metal sinks installed will oxidize after sometime and will obtain a patina which is a chemical change that causes the metal to change its color.

Copper metal is much softer to stainless steel and hence will scratch easily. Also it changes to a deep, weathered color as it oxidizes rapidly. It has antibacterial properties and hence will not be affected by bacteria on its surface. The metal polish applied on the copper sinks regularly will keep the copper sink to be brand new. Some people prefer the aged look of the copper sink wherein it will change unevenly and spot to exhibit rich color combinations ranging from pinks to greens to browns. Applying metal polish on the surface of the copper sinks will remove most scratched surfaces.

Bathroom Renovation Ideas-Renovating Your Bathroom Quickly And Affordably

By Josh Neumann

If you are like many people, you have many ideas for your bathroom renovation but simply don't know where to begin. Here are some tips to help you achieve the bathroom you want quickly and affordably.

Before you even begin the process, establish a plan and a budget for what you want accomplish with your bathroom renovating project and how much you want to spend to achieve those goals. All too often, many people begin without a clear plan of what they want to accomplish.

They get to the middle of the redesign process and realize that the new design is still not what they were looking for. This can be disastrous to both the wallet and their time.

Once you know how you want your bathroom's interior to look, establish a budget for accomplishing that plan and stick with it. Now go through and determine which areas of your bathroom need to be either redone or replaced.

For instance, you might decide that your toilet, bathtub and sink need replacing. Obviously, this can add up to quite a sum. Therefore, once you have your budget established, shop around for pricing on these appliances. You may find that you can only afford to replace your toilet and sink.

That's' okay-don't break the bank just to have that perfect bathroom. You may have to sacrifice a little at first, but be patient. Once you have the first part of the renovation project out of the way, wait until you have the extra cash, and finish the job.

For your appliances, try checking out discount stores, outlet stores, and especially the internet. Often times, you can find much better bargains online that you would ever find in your traditional retail store. If you start with these sources, you can usually find very high quality appliances for a fraction of the traditional retail store price.

Now comes the tough decision-should you do the bathroom renovating yourself or hire a professional? If you are like many people, you believe that you can save money by doing the work yourself, but this often isn't the case. Many times, inexperienced people who try to tackle a bathroom renovation project end up spending more money because they make so many mistakes and have to replace appliances in the middle of the project.

If you don't have a lot of renovation experience, particularly with your bathroom, leave it to a pro. It may seem like a large expense now, but you will end up saving yourself a pretty penny in the long run.

These are just a few helpful bathroom renovation ideas when beginning the seemingly daunting project. The truth is, many people believe that they can't achieve the bathroom (or overall interior design) they want without breaking the bank.

This just isn't true. The most important steps: write out your plan, establish your goal, shop at the suggested locations above, and trust a professional to do the rest. You will likely find that your bathroom renovation project goes much quicker and cheaper than you ever imagined possible.

Interior Design - Design Your Own Bathroom

There is a relatively new trend in bathroom design and that is creating the home spa. Sure, the spa feeling includes glamorous vanities, exclusive light fixtures, luxurious bathroom accessories and much more. It sounds expensive, doesn't it? Well, this is not necessarily true. If you look at interior decorating magazines you wonder how professionals get such amazing vanities and bathroom suites. That's not so hard. Creating a luxurious bathroom is, as a matter of fact, an affordable task and having a luxurious bathroom is no longer the exclusive privilege of a millionaire or Hollywood celebrity.

Probably the first step in redecorating your bathroom would be the acquisition of a new bathroom suite. There are so many models to choose from and so many are really affordable. You can opt for a contemporary look infused with an antique touch to create a romantic feeling, or you can even choose deep-set baths that will enhance that modern look you are trying to create. Mixing styles is a modern trend: don't be afraid to experience it. You'll get a bathroom design out of its time, one that cannot go out fashion, because it's distinctive and inimitable. Inimitable doesn't mean expensive: just give ebay a try. There you'll find bathtubs and bathroom suites for any budget. Besides, manufacturers all over the world compete to create more appealing products, using innovative materials, including acrylic, mineral crystal composites (such as the Quarrycast developed by the UK manufacturer Victoria & Albert), cast iron and much more.

You can even get that wellness spa feeling with a whirlpool bath, a steam shower or a massage shower cabin. No matter if your bathroom is small or big, there are always ways to transform it into a real home spa. Be creative and you'll see: you have endless possibilities.

What else is on your wish list? Vanities? They need to match the style of your bathroom suite. If that's white, you'll not have many problems choosing the colors. Vanities come in different styles as well. However, you need to make sure what you purchase is protected against warping in moist conditions.

Mirrors are magic: just think how they can reflect the light of your aromatherapy candles while you enjoy a bubble bath. Contemporary bathrooms have large frameless mirrors mounted on the walls or on the ceiling, endorsed by accent lighting that delivers the genuine impression of an ultra-modern home spa.

To complete this feeling you'll need a few additional accessories, such as fashionable heated towel rails (on sale during the summer), modern or traditional taps with special designs, maybe some plants, candles or special lamps, eventually a bathroom TV or a bathroom radio-CD-MP3-player. It's really modern to have in a bathroom an LCD bathroom TV with heated screen (that allows condensation-free viewing) and inbuilt water resistant speakers. But, if you cannot afford it, a bathroom radio-CD-MP3-player will create a pleasant mood too.

Taking a Hi-Tech Shower in style …

Taking a Hi-Tech Shower in style …

By James on Home Gadgets
Aqua Fountain Digital Shower
Everything is going digital today, so why not your shower as well?

You can replace those "analog" knobs for hot/cold water & shower with the The Grohe Ondus AquaFountain. The design is quite a head turner with all black waterproof casing, sleek handles coming out of a round, cylindrical base, and of course, the all digital interface creating a more precise temperature settings for the streaming water.

Here's how it works: Using the waterproof LCD touchpad, you can input desired temperature settings and save them to it's onboard memory – and there's even iconic male/female settings at a touch of a button. You can even preprogram the duration of your shower to save water. Additionally, if you get a call, hit the "pause" button and your shower will stop so you can quickly grab a towel and take the call, then return to the same temperature at the press of the play button. Incredible.

The highly arched shower head delivers either a steady waterfall or a gentle rain and the handle can be dislodged for those hard to reach areas or angles.
Wow, talk about high tech. Now that 5 minute shower that actually takes 30 minutes can truly last 5 minutes every day by programming it. But where's the fun in that?

Activated Charcoal Water Filters

You decide to consume the best drinking water possible; therefore, it is suggested that when drinking water directly from the faucet you should filter it first. You want to purchase a filter for your water that will last you and your family for years, and one that is really good at filtering out all unwanted materials. A high-end water filter that uses charcoal will absorb impurities as well as most harmful gases due to charcoal being very porous. Although the most expensive water filtering systems would be thought to do the best job, this is not always the case.

City water has raised some concerns for many people that fear drinking contaminated water without a filter is very terrible for you and your family. You can either spend money on purchasing bottled water every month or you may purchase a water filter system one time that may create savings in the long run. Who knows what kind of chemicals are left in the bottled water after the company filters it; if you are not sure you can always filter your own water. Who knows what lurks in the well water and when it is treated before it enters into your home; since this can not be determined purchasing a water filter system is a outstanding idea.

A highly porous material with a very large surface area used in many types of water filters is charcoal. Water is filtered as it passes through the earth; however, the quality of the filtration is undetermined. Chlorine and more chemicals are added to the water by your municipal treatment plant to help filter the water you drink from the tap. This system will make sure that your water is free from all toxins and any chemical that your body is not to consume in large amounts or at all. City water has been an issue for almost all families that maybe certain about drinking unfiltered water in their home and businesses.

A review of several water filter systems is the only way to understand what is available on the market and what is best for your situation. A radical sought after filtration method for water is known as reverse osmosis, where water is pushed through an ultra-fine semi-permeable tissue layer. After testing the drinking water from several homes and businesses, the lack of proper water filtering becomes very evident. Without going through the choices of how a water filter system works you should know that they reduce chlorine and toxins out of your faucet water. About half of the water supply for the world is polluted in some way by the industrialization of mankind, with no end in sight.

Bath Remodeling Cost

By remodeling baths in particular, you could raise resale value of a property and improve cost recouped to well over 100%, says Remodeling Magazine. That is especially true if you plan to sell the property within the year, as such renovation would guarantee a high resale value with recouped cost even at 120%.

So tear down those heavily stained tubs and replace it with a new tub. The same goes true with that toilet seat and toilet cover, tiles and window panes. Install a superior pressured balanced single lever shower (earlier models are far inferior from today's design). How about installing that new vanity you found to be gorgeously complimentary to the overall bath environment? While most common high end vanities are double sink, it isn't generally required for upscale purposes. Those cabinets, lighting fixtures and windows may need alteration too. For the bath remodeling cost, check further for more data.

Cost Versus Value
Cost vs. value is a discerning issue in remodeling with intentions of resale after. Shrewd remodeling options could at least offset costs made in weaker areas, such as replacement of windows or tiles and severely weaker areas like basement and sunrooms, or those areas that do not directly contribute to the visual yet add to the beneficial value.

A Cost versus Value example by Remodeling Magazine
Bath Remodeling Cost at $9,044 with resale value of $10,082

Updates: new tub installation, new toilet installation, added vanity, added medicine cabinet, improve lighting and replaced tiles. Cost recouped is 111%.

Bath Remodeling Cost including additional bathroom now at $13,779 with resale value of $16,820. Cost recouped is 122%.

As obviously illustrated, a minor addition to the first entry and the closing value rises 10%, already a substantial factor in terms of recouping loses. While 111% cost recouped is already a noteworthy achievement, the further 122% is maximizing cost recouped. Remember, this is only the bath remodeling.

Windows are decidedly different and may add only slightly to the overall property value, therefore, cost recouping in window remodeling may not always be 100% or higher.

Remodeling always involve the ability to sniff which areas are value hot spots, or remodeling payoff areas. While remodeling other areas are required, some remodeling you can do are for purely cosmetic reasons yet they add significantly to overall value, which also leads to a higher cost recoup. Do you know where those remodeling payoff areas are? They are the kitchen area, bedroom and bathroom areas.

Bathroom Facelifts - Where To Start?

The bathroom should be that warm and inviting room in your home where you can go to relax. To get away from it all. The place you go to take a bubble bath or long soothing shower to just rinse away the days problems or to wake you up in the morning before you leave for work. That being said your bathroom is going to need a facelift from time to time - to keep it feeling current and "fresh".

Maybe you're looking for some remodelling ideas to get you started on the road to enhancing your bathroom. A great tip to get you started is get all your ideas down on paper first. Sketch out visual ideas or just jot down exactly what you want the final product to look like. Once you've finished the "design" for your dream bathroom you'll then need to look at the budgeting aspect of your design. Be sure to include costs for contractors, electricians and plumbers if you're not a DIY fan. Even if you are A DIY fan, some remodeling issues can demand the need for outside help - due to their complexity or your lack of experience. This way, if you know the basic cost of things, you can be knowledgeable and certain to not get taken advantage of when the time comes for estimates and once the actual work begins.

The next step is to start looking for the items you'll need to or want to purchase for your new bathroom. There's a vast selection of bathroom and bathroom related merchandise available online. You'll be pleasantly surprised at the number of styles there are ranging from elegant to casual and contemporary.

Do you love to take a long soak in the tub? If so then you could look at a classic clawfoot bathroom bathtub. They have a certain charm to them that can add a real sense of "home" to your bathroom whilst also providing you with a comfortable place to relax and soak that tired body of yours. Next in line with the classics are the new jet powered and spa tubs. You can also install a jet powered shower with multiple heads with many options - everything from a light drizzle of water to an Amazonian downpour can be turned on with the flick of a switch.

Now comes the decision on the type of lighting to use. This is where most people have major issues. Recessed lighting is nice for a soft visual effect, but keep in mind that you won't get a really clear idea of what's going on when you look in the mirror because they tend to cause shadowing. If you really, really have to install recessed lighting then add some additional overhead lighting on or near your mirror.

Bathroom floors are also an area that many people kinda "skip" over. Do your absolute best to avoid any form of carpetting in your bathroom - it'll be a mess within 6 months. The use of ceramic tiles can add a truly tasteful accent to any room. Heck you can even purchase bathroom floor tiles that can be heated for those chilly winter mornings.

On this somber day Smolka Co. and the Bonsignore family ask thatArmed Forces Ceremonial Flag folding you remember the members of our Armed forces.

In their honor here is something that every American should know.

Why "TAPS" is played..

We in the United States have all heard the haunting song, "Taps". It's the song that gives us that lump in our throats and usually tears in our eyes.

But, do you know the story behind the song? If not, I think you will be interested to find out about its humble beginnings.

Reportedly, it all began in 1862 during the Civil War, when Union Army Captain Robert Ellicombe was with his men near Harrison's Landing in Virginia. The Confederate Army was on the other side of the narrow strip of land.

During the night, Captain Ellicombe heard the moans of a soldier who lay severely wounded on the field. Not knowing if it was a Union or Confederate soldier, the Captain decided to risk his life and bring the stricken man back for medical attention.

Crawling on his stomach through the gunfire, the Captain reached the stricken soldier and began pulling him toward his encampment.

When the Captain finally reached his own lines, he discovered it was actually a Confederate soldier, but the soldier was dead

The Captain lit a lantern and suddenly caught his breath and went numb with shock. In the dim light, he saw the face of the soldier. It was his own son. The boy had been studying music in the South when the war broke out. Without telling his father, the boy enlisted in the Confederate Army.

The following morning, heartbroken, the father asked permission of his superiors to give his son a full military burial, despite his enemy status. His request was only partially granted.

The Captain had asked if he could have a group of Army band members play a funeral dirge for his son at the funeral. The request was turned down since the soldier was a Confederate. But, out of respect for the father, they did say they could give him only one musician.

The Captain chose a bugler. He asked the bugler to play a series of musical notes he had found on a piece of paper in the pocket of the dead youth's uniform. This wish was granted.

The haunting melody, we now know as "Taps" used at military funerals was born.
The words are:

Day is done ... Gone the sun

From the lakes ... From the hills ...
From the sky .. All is well.

Safely rest .. God is nigh.

Fading light .. Dims the sight ..

And a star ... Gems the sky

Gleaming bright From afar ..

Drawing nigh . Falls the night.
Thanks and praise ... For our days.

Neath the sun ... Neath the stars...

Neath the sky. As we go
This we know .. God is nigh

I, too, have felt the chills while listening to "Taps" but I have never seen all the words to the song until now. I didn't even know there was more than one verse. I also never knew the story behind the song and I didn't know if you had either so I thought I'd pass it along.

I now have an even deeper respect for the song than I did before.

Remember Those Lost and Harmed While Serving Their Country And also those presently serving in the Armed Forces. Please say a short prayer for our soldiers...

Mostly high-end gadgets, but some affordable

All 'manor' of things for kitchen and bath

VIEW VIDEO
LAS VEGAS - Feet hurt at the end of the day? If you have the room and about $14,000, Kohler offers the Pedicure Spa, which features a whirlpool footbath, a chaise longue, a technician's chair, and the necessary faucet and drain components.

Up to now, it's been a commercial product primarily, but it's likely the Pedicure Spa will find its way into the highest-end homes, to help high-end consumers live life to the fullest.

The full life is an expensive concept, and it's what a lot of the annual Kitchen and Bath Industry Show is about. Still, among the 900 exhibits sprawled over 2 million square feet of the Las Vegas Convention Center last week, there were some trendy new products both useful and affordable.

For example, about $300 and a quick stop at the home center can get you a quieter garbage disposer, the InSinkErator Evolution Excel.

To demonstrate just how quiet, Eric Schultz, the company's director of brand and channel management, ground up vegetable material and chicken bones side by side in new and old models. Then he showed off strainers filled with the resulting debris, to demonstrate how small the remaining bits were.

Priced about $300 and up, depending on style, are Caroma's dual-flush toilets, designed for use in dry Australia but said to have sold well in North America last year. The toilets offer a choice of 0.8-gallon or 1.6-gallon flushes, billed as potentially saving 3,000-plus gallons of water a year for the typical user.

"In Melbourne, if they catch you washing your car or watering your lawn, they shut off your water," said Glenn Sheargold of SSI, Caroma's distributor in the western United States. He noted that Caroma also has developed a toilet, soon to be on the Australian market, that uses gray water from the bathroom-sink drain for flushing.

When it came to toilets, comfort seemed to be as important as saving water - the number of seat-warming devices exhibited at the show was about double last year's complement.

And in the unusual-commode-design department was Villeroy & Boch's CityLife SmartBench, truly a piece of bathroom furniture. The SmartBench conceals a ceramic toilet, and a wooden seat and storage for toilet paper and a brush are integrated into a frosted-glass panel.

"Eco-friendliness" was a popular theme at this year's show, and the products often were not homegrown. Foreign manufacturers, especially Europeans, are exporting their energy-efficient products to the United States, with American firms following their example.

"We call it 'eco-leadership,' " said Franz J. Bosshard, president and chief executive officer of Bosch.
His company's entire product line is Energy Star-qualified, which means it meets Environmental Protection Agency efficiency standards. Some of the washers and dishwashers come with an "Ecooption" button that reduces energy consumption by an additional 25 percent, as well as systems that can customize the wash cycle.

"Green" qualities also were evident in materials being featured at the show, especially bamboo used in flooring and cabinetry. Teragran, one of this country's major bamboo-material producers, touted a bamboo parquet butcher block for countertops and tables.

For the kitchen, induction cooking remained a hot trend, and the number of foreign and domestic manufacturers producing cooktops took a giant leap between last year's show and this year's.

In induction cooking, a magnetic pan is used, and underneath it a magnetic field is created that transfers heat to the pan instead of the glass cooktop itself. That results in even distribution of temperature, greater control of heat, and 90 percent efficiency compared with about 60 percent for gas.

Virtually every appliance-maker was showing an induction cooktop, and prices have continued to drop - they now range from $2,500 to $5,000. Any number of demonstrations last week featured candy bars simmering for the entire day in a pan and, until you touched the chocolate with a spoon, the word "Hershey" was clearly visible on each piece.

Of course, there was cooking of all types going on. TurboChef's $7,400 30-inch Speedcook Oven debuted at last year's show and has been on the market since April, yet the two demonstration counters on either side of its booth were filled with showgoers tasting Pillsbury cinnamon rolls cooked to perfection in 2 minutes instead of 12 to 15, and a turkey roasted in just 42 minutes.

TurboChef marketing chief Steve Beshara said response to the oven has been so great that "we've started developing recipes designed for it."

When Sharp introduced its countertop AX-700S Superheated Steam Oven last year for $1,200, the company provided a cookbook to help consumers make full use of the appliance.

Several other appliance-makers have followed suit, including Ariston, whose in-the-wall coffeemaker, introduced last year, had a potful of competitors this year.

In a steam oven, superheated steam molecules come into direct contact with the food. They give off heat that penetrates the food, melting most of the internal fat and leaving moisture behind. Ariston's in-wall oven tops out at $2,000.

Its coffeemaker costs about $2,500, about the same price as its new competitors. Recognizing that many consumers consider specialty coffeemakers too temperamental to be part of a wall, the Italian company now also makes a countertop version for the same price.

Competition reigned in the materials marketplace, too.

Walker Zanger, the tile and stone company, touted a process for creating large-scale artisan tiles by elongating smaller ones and is collaborating with designer Michael Berman on several product lines.

"The new technology lets us create allover . . . patterns to take tile to another territory," said Berman, whose designs for Walker Zanger are, in his words, "emblematic of movies of the 1930s through the 1970s."

Meanwhile, range-hood maker Zephyr is continuing its partnership with designer Fu-Tung Cheng, whose Padova hoods evoke the feeling of the kitchens of Northern Italy. Cheng wants people to "personalize design" by creating interchangeable panels of concrete, plaster and mosaic tile ranging from $500 to $1,300, but some of Cheng's rustic modern and ancient Roman hoods can cost in the thousands.

Design and technology meshed in several places, including the KBIS Design Idea Center that was coproduced with Meredith, the shelter magazine and book publisher; at the NextGen Home display, a fixture at every show, and in the Digital Kitchen.
What made this kitchen unusual was its relatively compact size, based on a survey conducted by the Internet Home Alliance that showed that while most homeowners wanted their kitchen to be connected and the hub of activity, "they don't necessarily want it to be large, nor do they want a separate workstation."

What the survey respondents did want was "a more innovative design that freed up counter space," said alliance vice president Tim Woods.

Most importantly, the survey revealed, they want a calendar that keeps track of family activities and that everybody can contribute to.

One solution presented: the HPSmartCalendar, part of the HP TouchSmart PC. The price of organization: $1,849.

Baths going back to nature

By: John Byrd

A spacious personal spa in the Oakton home of Mary Rigg shows some of the ways in which textures and colors are to be seen in today's baths. Rigg had seen a rare Turkish granite (roho alhante) at the NSO Designer Showhouse in Washington, DC, then found out it had just been procured by Michael Nash Kitchens and Baths and their Fairfax showroom.

"There was simply no turning back once I knew I could get that color and texture," Rigg says, noting that she opted to "just do the bathroom I always wanted." Set off by a cherry wood Victorian vanity with vessel sinks, the room is both lively and warm.

"We had a lot of design help at the showroom. The alternating tile sizes and angles in the shower they proposed create a wonderful visual rhythm," Rigg says. "I've never known a room that makes me feel as good."

In a theme variation, Christa Deford of Herndon wanted a retreat not only for herself and her husband, but also as a family-use facility available to her children.

"I wanted a steam shower and a Jacuzzi for two that looks into our wooded back yard," says Deford. "But I also created the space so all three of our sports-active kids could take turns relaxing in the whirlpool bath after a game or practice."

Deford notes that a kid-friendly television is mounted nearby. The teens are also invited to enjoy the steam shower (complete with bench) which Deford says is more relaxing than a sauna. "Just what active, busy people need," she notes.

The master bath was actually one of three executed by Michael Nash in the same assignment. Deford worked with a showroom staff designer to both create a working space plan and make the selections for floor and wall coverings. The black and terra cotta granite in combination with a neatly minimalist vanity creates a faintly Mediterranean ambiance, but Deford says she made conservative choices that would "facilitate a resale when needed."

"We're comfortable with our upgrades as an investment," says Deford who had hired Nash to do their kitchen five years ago. "Still if your goal is to make a design statement the showroom does offer an enormous range of choices."

Tiling in Mediterranean, glass-and-mirror or ultra-contemporary stylings; above-counter sinks in porcelain, stainless steel and jewel-toned artisan glass, Jacuzzis with ergonomically correct head and arm rests, and showers that double as a sauna. These are just a few features to be seen in the Fairfax showroom of Michael Nash, with its 15 fully assembled displays. But more revealing of local trends is how often today's master bathrooms are custom affairs, a product of a burgeoning accessories industry and the homeowner's fervent desire to own luxury now.

"There's really no precedent for the exploding demand for luxury baths," says the Micheal Nash president and CEO, Sonny Nazemian, who has been watching local trends for 28 years and whose firm has received numerous "Contractor of the Year" awards for excellence and bathroom remodeling:

"Ten years ago we completed, perhaps, 80 new bathrooms a year; five years ago the figure was about 160. Last year, we finished 212 all over northern Virginia - and the project size and quality have increased exponentially."

Nazemian thinks the psychological element underlying demand is the desire for "personal cocoon" to which a homeowner can retreat.

" An open, well-lighted space with warm contrasting textures, bold fluffy towels and a two-person Jacuzzi bubbling at your body temperature is a great place to relax," Nazemian chuckles. "We get homeowners who rank the master bath as their favorite part of the house... in fact, of life itself."

Nazemian also observes several design trends that are consistently in play. Among these:

Bathroom size: It's not just about utility anymore; a master bathroom needs to imply room to stretch out and luxuriate

Multi functional Amenities: a separate shower and bath are de rigueur in a high-end spa, but whirlpools now come with comforting head and arm rests. Above-counter sinks are functional as well as objects d'artes.

Textured materials: Design statements unifying such disparate materials as ceramic tile, stone, granite, marble and glass create a "textured look" that lends your spa a visceral sensuality. Personal art and collectibles are commonly integrated into this picture depending on taste.

Colors for accent and spice: A bathroom hasn't been "hospital white" for years, but today's broad palette would satisfy a Wilhelm de Kooning, or any of the abstract expressionists who made clashes of color and texture into high art. Combining muted tones with bright strokes is a start, but today's bathrooms explore advanced interior design ideas.

American Standard, Porcher and JADO Bring Ingenuity to New Designs at Kitchen/Bath Show

New Bathroom and Kitchen Products Focus On Making Consumers' Lives Better,
Easier

LAS VEGAS, May 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- KITCHEN/BATH INDUSTRY SHOW
-- Comfort, conservation, convenience and chic styling mark the new
standard for what consumers can expect from bathroom and kitchen fixtures
at the 2007 Kitchen and Bath Industry Show (K/BIS). American Standard,
Porcher(R) and JADO have set the bar high by introducing new products with
unexpected features that help make consumers' lives easier, while adding
beauty to their kitchens and baths.
Whether it's a new next-generation flushing system for toilets,
showerheads with water conservation features or handcrafted bathroom
furniture that installs without tools, it's all on display at the Las Vegas
Convention Center today through Thursday.
"These new products demonstrate our commitment to making life better in
the bathroom and kitchen for consumers," says Jeannette Long, director of
marketing communications, American Standard. "Our exclusive technologies
and innovative designs show how American Standard has put ingenuity,
quality and performance to work for them."
Following is an overview of what's new from American Standard, Porcher
and JADO at K/BIS (#C3735).
Champion(R) 4 Flushing System
The next-generation Champion 4 flushing system laps the competition --
and American Standard's own previous breakthough -- with the widest
waterways in the industry, virtually eliminating clogging, noisy flushes
and the dreaded overflow. Featuring a four-inch opening between the tank
and the bowl, it creates incredible water power by pushing water into the
bowl three times faster than the standard two-inch flush valve and
one-third faster than a 3 1/4-inch flush valve. Its wide-open, fully glazed
trapway can move almost 70 percent more mass than a standard two-inch
trapway.
FloWise(R) Toilet and FloWise(R) Showerheads
FloWise(R), the first toilet to reduce water usage by more than 20
percent without a dual flush, has now earned it the right to bear the new
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) WaterSense(SM) label. Much like the
ENERGY STAR program for appliances, the program makes it easy for consumers
to select water-efficient products. To earn the WaterSense label, a toilet
must use only 1.28 gallons per flush (gpf), down 20 percent from the 1.6
gpf found in conventional toilets. Similarly, American Standard introduces
three new FloWise showerheads that use only 1.5 gallons per minute or 40
percent less water than the current code for showerheads.
Stylish Preassembled Bathroom Furniture
A new collection of five handcrafted vanities from American Standard
comes pre-assembled, yet ingeniously folded down, making it easy for
consumers to carry the furniture, maneuver it through doors and upstairs,
and install without tools. The vanities arrive folded, yet fully assembled,
in a flat box. To install, simply unfold. The furniture is available in
three chic, natural hardwood designs including Cardiff, a modern,
contemporary style; Jefferson, a clean Colonial style; and Cambridge, a
transitional design that evokes an English country feel.
Porcher/JADO Design Experience Contest Winners
Winners of the first-ever Porcher/JADO Design Experience Contest will
be in the booth to showcase their winning design concepts. Porcher and JADO
invited designers from across the nation to share their ideas and talents
by entering design concepts for either a powder room or a master bathroom,
and to incorporate Porcher and JADO products and accessories into their
designs. John Kim and Tai Moy of KIMOY Studios, New York, N.Y., won in the
master bathroom category and Alex Gil of Alex Gil Design, Brooklyn, N.Y.,
won in the powder room category. Both category winners received a grand
prize package valued at $15,000 including $5,000 in cash, a four-day trip
to Paris to visit the Porcher showroom, and the opportunity to informally
discuss their designs in the booth in Las Vegas. The designers will make an
appearance in the booth on May 8 and 9 between 1-3 p.m.
Also in the booth will be these featured products from American
Standard, Porcher and JADO.
Copeland(TM) Collection Faucets
The new Copeland collection of faucets, a uniquely American
transitional style, includes centerset and widespread lavatory faucets,
deck-mounted tub fillers with or without personal shower, as well as bath
and shower trim and valve kits.
Moments(TM) Collection of Contemporary Faucets
The Moments collection reflects minimalist European design trends.
Created by award-winning German design studio Artefakt, the line includes
faucets, valves and escutcheons for bidets, baths and showers.
Undercounter Bath Sinks
Two new vitreous china sinks -- the Tudor and Rattan undercounter
lavatories -- feature subtle, linear design lines around the basin that are
reminiscent of the S-curves used in furniture and architecture. Both are
engineered without crevices for dirt to hide.
Afwall(R) FloWise(R) and Madera(R) FloWise(R) Commercial Toilets
Two new 1.28 gpf commercial toilets are high efficiency flushers,
consuming 20 percent less water than the industry standard of 1.6 gpf. Both
offer water conservation without compromising performance. Available for
use with American Standard's new Afwall FloWise and Madera FloWise 1.28 gpf
toilets, the new Selectronic valve automatically compensates for
fluctuations in water pressure.
Cadet(R) 3 Compact Toilets
Cadet 3 toilets fit elongated comfort into a round front space. The
one- and two-piece compact toilets feature American Standard's fired-in,
permanent, antimicrobial EverClean(TM) surface that helps them stay cleaner
longer.
Fashion Forward Tropic(TM) Toilet
American Standard's new Tropic two-piece toilet demands attention with
an artfully designed tank and trip level to complement the popular Tropic
faucet collection. Its unique design makes a statement that goes with the
flow in any design environment.
Green Tea(TM) Collection of Whirlpools, Faucets
A new collection of whirlpools and faucets from American Standard helps
restore the balance and serenity to life within the privacy and comfort of
the bath. The Asian-inspired design is elegant, yet unadorned in its
purity.
Porcher's Fifth and 57th Line of Luxury Bath Furniture
New York City's Fifth Avenue, famed for the world's most exquisite
shopping, is the inspiration for a new collection of elegant bathroom
furniture from Porcher. The line features art deco styling with elegant,
clean lines, rich wood tones and sculptural hardware.
JADO Nickel Finish Bathroom Faucets
German-engineered JADO bathroom faucets are now available in Antique
Nickel finish. Nickel finishes are among the most popular for luxury
fixtures, fine hardware and lighting.
JADO Glance(TM) Kitchen Faucet
JADO'S Glance collection now has a kitchen faucet in addition to its
popular bath offerings. Making its stateside debut, the faucet features a
single-handle monoblock with the collection's signature "joystick" slender
lever handle.
JADO IQ(TM) Semi-Pro Kitchen Faucet
The clean lines, curves and workhorse functionality of this faucet were
born from the inspiration of Matteo Thun, former creative director for
Swatch. Multi-tasking gourmets will love its contemporary design combined
with functional prowess.
JADO IQ(TM) Faucet Series for the Bath and Kitchen
With an aptitude for minimalism that offers an understated verve, the
new IQ series faucets for the bath and kitchen stand apart from
cookie-cutter contemporary rivals.

Digital Kitchen Study

Internet Home Alliance Releases Digital Kitchen Study Results Consumers Reveal What's Happening in American Kitchens Today and What Technology Innovations They Want Most in the Future

CABA Internet Home Alliance Research Council, a network of leading companies advancing the home technology market, will announce tomorrow at the 2007 Kitchen/Bath Industry Show (K/BIS) at the Las Vegas Convention Center, the results of its Digital Kitchen Study, intended to determine how consumers are using their kitchens today and what technology innovations homeowners would most like to add to their kitchens in the future.

A cross-industry collaboration involving Internet Home Alliance members Whirlpool Corporation, Bell Canada, Cisco Systems, Inc., Direct Energy, HP, HomeCrest Cabinetry, Intel Corporation, Microsoft, The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), and the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA), the study yielded results that have been used to create the "ideal digital kitchen," which will also be unveiled at K/BIS. Owned by NKBA, K/BIS, which runs from May 8-10, is the world's largest international trade event dedicated to the kitchen and bath industry. The ideal digital kitchen will be on display at K/BIS in the Industry Trends Marketplace (South Hall) on the second floor near aisle marker S11000.

Conducted by Zanthus, a research and consulting firm, the Alliance's Digital Kitchen Study was based on a survey that reached 602 homeowners between the ages of 25 and 64 who have broadband Internet access and household incomes of more than $35,000 per year. An equal number of men and women responded, each reporting that they made the primary purchasing decisions for kitchen appliances and consumer electronics in their households.

The survey results showed that the kitchen functions as the nerve center of the house, with most families doing much more than just cooking and eating there. Other popular kitchen activities include entertaining friends, watching TV, doing homework, paying bills, talking on the phone, planning schedules and events and leaving messages and reminders for other family members.

"The kitchen is clearly the hub of the home but, surprisingly, bigger kitchens aren't necessarily better for most U.S. homeowners," said Tim Woods, vice president, Internet Home Alliance. "For example, we thought that a desk or workstation would be a popular kitchen addition but, in fact, most homeowners told us that a computer on a counter worked just as well. The key was an innovative kitchen design that freed up counter space."

Designed by NKBA certified kitchen designer, Blue Arnold, the Alliance's ideal digital kitchen features the following innovations, which the Digital Kitchen study found to be most desired by consumers:
Digital Calendar. The survey found that the primary kitchen user is also the primary schedule keeper and a digital calendar was the most preferred concept of the 22 concepts tested. Those surveyed reported wanting a calendar on a large screen that allows users to add appointments and post notes that everyone in the household can see and access, whether from the kitchen or via the Internet.

Recipe Projection System. Eight in ten of those surveyed said they cook for enjoyment, and 64% do so at least several times per week. Consumers reported wanting a wireless recipe projection system that would allow them to look up a recipe online, or even say aloud what they want to cook (e.g. "beef stroganoff"), and then have the recipe projected onto a surface in the kitchen from a small cabinet-mounted device.

Energy Usage Monitoring and Control System. Those surveyed reported wanting to monitor energy consumption by area (family room, swimming pool, etc.) and appliance (hot water heater, etc.); to monitor energy usage by circuit; to chart peak energy usage times; to diagnose areas of wasted energy; and to calculate energy costs. This concept was most popular in the West where California recently became the first state in the nation to impose an emissions cap on utilities, refineries and factories.

Home Control Station. Consumers want a home control station in their kitchen that allows them to manage their HVAC and security systems easily. Specifically, they requested a screen where they can view the temperature inside and outside of their home, adjust the thermostat on a touch pad and view live video of both the front and back of their house. This functionality is equally appealing to households with and without children.

Universal Charging Station. Consumers reported wanting to charge up to three cell phones or PDAs simultaneously, regardless of brand or model. One-third of households reported that they currently keep their cell phones on the kitchen counter and one-half said they keep their phone chargers there as well. Consumers would like a Universal Charging Station so every-one can charge their phones in the spot where their phones and chargers are usually kept.

Wireless Internet Access. Consumers want a wireless network in their home so they can have wireless Internet access in all rooms, including the kitchen. Twenty-nine percent of homeowners and 43% of those remodeling their homes want to surf the Web while in the kitchen.Consumers reported wanting Internet access for emailing and Web surfing and don't want to use a PC in the kitchen for offline applications.Wired Internet access is not desired; just 5% of homeowners said they wanted wired Internet access in their kitchen.

The survey results suggest that most consumers are looking for functionality and control from their kitchens, rather than entertainment. But while most respondents showed little interest in watching movies or playing video games in the kitchen, they do want a television there. Right now, 33% of homeowners watch TV in the kitchen, 43% want to watch TV in their ideal kitchen, and 51% of respondents planning to remodel their kitchens in 2007 intend to include a television.

The results also suggest that marketers and retailers should assume that both husbands and wives firmly believe that their opinions and choices prevail, both for appliances and consumer electronics.

"Whirlpool's ongoing consumer insight research has found that consumers want to free up cluttered counters and streamline the device charging process with a universal charging station," said David Swift, president of Whirlpool North America. "For example, one of our latest innovations, the centralpark™ connection, will help consumers achieve their ideal kitchen by providing a plug-and-play platform right on the refrigerator door."

Consumers reported the following regarding how they are currently using their kitchens and would like to use their kitchens in the future:
Kitchen as control center not entertainment center. While some who are remodeling their kitchen said they want to watch movies and videos in the kitchen, the vast majority (85%) of homeowners said they don't see themselves watching videos or movies in the kitchen, perhaps because those are activities that need time and attention, two things in short supply when making dinner. In addition, the vast majority (93%) would not play video games in their ideal kitchen. There are just two entertainment-oriented items that consumers want in their ideal kitchen of the future: a TV and wireless Internet access.

Keep the Play-Doh away from the cookie dough. In homes with children, 43% reported doing arts and crafts in the kitchen. But 69% of all parents say they don't want their kids doing arts and crafts projects in the kitchen. In homes without children, the survey found that crafting activities rarely take place in the kitchen.
Crack the books but not where you crack the eggs. According to the survey, 48% of children do their homework in the kitchen. But the survey also found that most parents (59%) would prefer their kids do their homework elsewhere.

Weather or Not. The survey revealed that 37% of homeowners would like to check the weather from their kitchen. However, an on-demand weather information device was chosen by just 12% of respondents as something they'd like in their ideal kitchen. It may be that a device which provides weather information only, is less appealing than wireless Internet access in the kitchen, which can transmit a variety of content.

Water Filter Cartridges Will Purify Your Supply And Remove Harmful Chemicals

Water is an essential part of life, and many doctors recommend drinking a large quantity of water every day for optimum health. The water that comes through the tap into each home has a different quality depending on the source of the water supply for that community. The water coming into each home around the country varies in purity, smell and taste.

Many people who believe in drinking plenty of water every day search for the best possible water for their health. Some of these people buy bottled water because they believe that this water is best for them. Others have turned to water filtration systems for pure water.

The water filtration systems can save money for those who have turned to bottled water, and people should be able to get a pure supply of water with these filtration systems. These filtration systems usually depend on water filter cartridges, and these work in different ways. Those that are interested in a filtration system to purify their water should look at each of the systems and the water filter cartridges that are used in each system. The water filter cartridges differ in methods of filtration and costs.

Water Filter Cartridges Are Vital Parts Of Most Filtration Systems

There are large water filter systems that will purify the entire water supply that comes into the home. These systems will purify the water coming into the kitchen faucet. This water is often used for drinking, cooking and making coffee. These systems also purify the water that goes into the bathrooms for showers and baths.

These water filter systems will deliver chemically and microbiologically pure water for optimum health benefits. In addition, some of these systems deliver softer water for better results in dishwashers and washing machines. These systems often provide quality because of the water filter cartridges that are used with the system.

At the other end of the spectrum, there are smaller units that can be placed on the kitchen counter for water purification. These units are usually filled as the water is needed for drinking and making beverages including coffee and tea. Some people might use these smaller units for cooking as well.

The efficiency of these small units also depends on the water filter cartridges designed for these units. These water filter cartridges efficiently remove the harmful substances from the water, but these water filter cartridges purify a much smaller quantity of water

Have You Checked Out These BathTub Options

If you are building a new home, or even if you are remodeling a home, one of the most important rooms in the house is going to be your bathroom. You want a bathroom that is tastefully decorated and comfortable, and most of all, you want to make sure that you pick out a great bathroom tub so you can enjoy those special moments of relaxation when you have the opportunity to take them. For many people, a difficult day can be cleansed away by a hot bath, which allows for time to relax and to let the stress of the day be washed away. There are many different bathtubs that are available to choose from, but you want to make sure that you pick the bathtub that is best suited for you.

Corner Bathroom Bathtub

One type of tub that you may want to consider when choosing from the myriad of bathtubs available is a corner bathroom tub. If you want to save room for storage shelves or perhaps even a shower stall, a corner tub can be a great choice. This type of tub looks great in a modern bathroom since the shape is quite a bit different from traditional tubs, and it is also quite a bit wider, which can add more space for your relaxation, or even make it a great place for two to enjoy a great bubble bath together.

Round Tub

If you are looking for an impressive bathtub that will astound all that see it and will look contemporary and chic, then a round tub is a great choice. Of course you will probably need to have quite a bit of space in your bathroom, since this tub takes up a good bit of space, but the look and the design is well worth the extra space needed. Round bathtubs come in various sizes, and you may even be able to get one that is built for two that will provide extra space for optimum soaking.

Whirlpool Tubs

If you want to add that extra dimension to your evening soak, you may want to consider the whirlpool bathtubs that can make your bath such a delightful experience. These types of tubs are designed with a whirlpool system that will keep the water moving and provide a massaging effect while you are in the water. They also come in a variety of different shapes and styles, so you can have a whirlpool tub while still going along with the décor of your bathroom.

No matter what style of bathtub you decide to choose for your bathroom, one important thing to remember is you are probably going to be the one cleaning it, so make sure that it is a tub that is relatively easy to clean. Purchase a tub that is made out of a material that will not easily scratch or stain. If you find a tub that looks great, feels great, and is easy to clean, then you will be able to enjoy many relaxing evenings in your tub enjoying your choice.
